Expected Changes in ISO 9001:2026
What should industries anticipate from this new version? Based on CD2, key highlights include:
-
Enhanced Risk Management: The new version will adopt a more proactive approach to risk management.
-
Digital Transformation: Emphasis on integrating digital technologies into quality management processes.
-
Sustainability Practices: Integration of sustainability into organizational practices.
-
Stakeholder Engagement: Increased focus on engaging stakeholders effectively.
While the current version emphasizes risk-based thinking, the upcoming version will delineate risk management from opportunity management to highlight their distinct approaches. Furthermore, to promote social responsibility, organizations will be required to ensure that their Quality Management Systems (QMS) support environmental stewardship throughout their supply chains. Although changes may occur between CD2 and the final version, one certainty remains: the new standard will address pressing industry challenges that organizations face today.
Timeline for ISO 9001:2026 Revision
The timeline for the ISO 9001:2026 revision process includes several key stages:
-
Committee Draft 2 (CD2): January - June 2025
-
Draft International Standard (DIS): July 2025 - March 2026
-
Final Draft International Standard (FDIS): April - June 2026 (if required)
-
Publication of ISO 9001:2026: Scheduled for September 2026

This revision aims to ensure that ISO 9001 remains relevant amidst rapid technological advancements and evolving business landscape. It seeks to modernize quality management practices while maintaining alignment with other management systems like ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. The anticipated changes in ISO 9001:2026 reflect a commitment to enhancing quality management systems, ensuring organizations can adapt and thrive in an increasingly complex environment.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has announced an extension for the
deadline to obtain ISO 21001:2018 certification, now set for December 31, 2025. This
decision aims to provide universities with the necessary time to effectively implement
the management system. It can be recalled that in May 2023, CHED released
Memorandum Order No. 6, which mandates all autonomous and deregulated
universities in the Philippines to achieve certification in the Educational Organization
Management System (EOMS).
The primary objective of this directive is to enhance quality assurance across higher
education institutions nationwide. By implementing the ISO 21001:2018 framework,
educational organizations can significantly impact their management systems and
organizational culture. The standard emphasizes several key principles:

-
Learner-Centric Education: Prioritizing student needs and fostering learning success.
-
Continual Improvement: Encouraging a culture of regular performance evaluation and data-driven improvement.
-
Effectiveness and Efficiency: Optimizing resource use and streamlining administrative processes.
-
Stakeholder Engagement: Promoting collaboration among students, faculty, and staff to facilitate effective learning environment.

For institutions already certified under ISO 9001:2015, transitioning to ISO 21001 is
expected to be straightforward due to the similarities between the two standards.
However, this transition will require additional training and adjustments in
documentation to meet the specific requirements of ISO 21001:2018.
As CHED continues to raise standards in higher education, this initiative represents a
significant step towards fostering a culture of excellence within Philippine universities.
ISO/TC 176/SC2 AMENDS ISO 9001:2015 STANDARD TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE
The ISO 9001:2015 standard has undergone its first amendment,
effective February 22, 2024, aimed at integrating considerations for climate change within the organizational context. While this amendment does not mandate re-certification for ISO-certified companies, organizations are required to demonstrate evidence of considering the potential effect of climate change in their Quality Management System (QMS) when evaluating both internal and external factors.
The key additions introduced in the amendment pertain to Clause 4.0. Firstly, the end of Clause 4.1 states, "The organization shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue." Additionally, a note has been appended to the end of Clause 4.2, indicating that "Relevant interested parties may have requirements related to climate change."
While compliance with this amendment does not necessitate certification or re-certification, the industry is anticipating the forthcoming revision of the ISO 9001:2015 standard, expected to be released in 2026. Certified companies will be obliged to adopt the new standard and undergo re-certification during a three-year transition period following its release.
